1st Battle of Bull Run : These are pictures I took at the Reenactment of the 1st Battle of Bull Run (Manassas) which occurred July 21, 1861. William B. Newman, my Great, great grandfather fought in this battle when he was with the 14th Brooklyn, who were nicknamed the "Red Legged Devils" by Stonewall Jackson. He was mustered out of the Army after his 100 day enlistment in Aug 1861. Upon returning to Brooklyn, he followed the footsteps of his father, William D. Newman (1804-1844), a Naval officer (Lt. CDR) and enlisted in the Navy.

Some of the 14th reenactment group participated in the reenactment, photos 53-63 (July 22, 2006). There were approximately 8,000 reenactors and 200 calvary who provided an exciting 2 hour battle at the Cedar Creek battlefield in Middleton, VA.

Battle of Plymouth, NC : On the afternoon of 17 April 1864, Confederate ground forces attacked Plymouth, NC with artillery and musketry. The Union gunboats,USS Miami and USS Southfield, in the vicinity helped to defend the town for the remainder of the day and throughout the next. But worst of all, the air was rife with rumors that Rebel ironclad ram Albemarle was ready to descend the Roanoke River to destroy the Union warships in the sounds. Before dawn on the morning of 19 April, Albemarle emerged from the Roanoke raced toward the Miami and Southfield. When the three ships collided, the ram scraped across Miami's bow, smashed through Southfield's starboard side, and pierced the wooden gunboat's boiler. For a moment, both Miami and AIbemarle were entangled with the fatally wounded doubleender. The forward ropes which had lashed Southfield to Miami were snapped by the collision, and the aft lines were cut by Miami's crew. Albemarle had a harder time extricating herself from her bested and rapidly sinking adversary.

My Great, great grandfather, William B. Newman was the Executive Officer on the Southfield and reportedly fired the last shot on the Albemarle before it sunk. He swam to shore and was captured by the Confederates later in the morning.

Each year Plymouth, NC organizes a reenactment of the battle. In 2006, my father and mother, his cousin, Alice Mellen and her husband, George, myself and our son Colin attended the reenactment. We were the first decendents from the Southfield to participate.
